Some people may tell you that you do not need an attorney for a traffic ticket. That is sometimes true. But our firm has seen, many, many times, clients come to us after they paid a ticket or plead guilty and they end up getting points on their license, a license suspension or worse. Let me tell you, you should at least consult with an attorney. Because many traffic offenses carry points or license suspensions and they are serious matters. Some can even carry jail time. And if you possess a commercial driver’s license, (“CDL”) it is even more important to consult with an attorney and consider fighting your ticket.
If you are caught with a speeding ticket, driving on a suspended license or a moving violation, the consequences can impact your driver’s record, insurance rates, or even more. For example, let’s take speeding tickets. In Pennsylvania, ALL speeding tickets that cite you for greater than 5 miles per hour over the speed limit result in points on your license. If you accumulate too many points on your license, you can be required to take a test, attend a hearing or sometimes the state will suspend your license. In addition, your car insurance company may consider you a higher risk and even raise your monthly rates. Our law firm knows how to get speeding ticket violations reduced. And we also know how to challenge speeding tickets if we have to go to a hearing. Accumulating points is not good. We will help you avoid getting points tallied on your license.
Other serious offenses include driving on a suspended license or driving without your license. A driving on a suspended license charge can result in a one-year license suspension. If you have received multiple offenses of driving on a suspended license you can even face jail time or house arrest. These cases certainly call for legal advice and expertise. In the event that you have a DUI related license suspension, and you pick up a driving under suspension charge, it is crucial that you contact our firm. Those types of charges come with mandatory jail sentences and lawyers can work hard to get the charge completely dismissed or have the sentence altered to house arrest. Act fast if you face one or more of these charges.
Finally, moving offenses can be very detrimental to your driving history and general well-being. An offense like Careless Driving will put points on your license. An offense like Reckless Driving comes with a mandatory jail sentence. There are often many angles that our firm can use to defeat and defend these cases. Do not just plead guilty. Plead not guilty and speak to an attorney.
There are many more driving offenses than just the ones I list above. Some contain points and some have special requirements for the police to convict you on them. It is always worth consulting with a lawyer. Here at Joe Pometto Law we have Pittsburgh Criminal Attorneys standing by, ready to defend your case and protect your license. Losing your driver’s license or getting points on it can cause real financial harm. Don’t fight them alone. We are here to help.
